Compression

01/02/2010

I have been thinking about Compression. Really? WTF does that mean? Well, think about it. Compression happens. It happens every minute of every day! This bit from poet Charles Olson is amazing:

I love the way he describes the interplay of heart and head. I think that one of the things that has always been compelling to me about any form of art is the element of compression. The way that the painter captures, the photographer filters, the way the musician refines, the way the writer interprets. These are all moments of compression. It is a compression of feeling, emotion, vision, love, fear, hope, and on and on and on into a medium. It becomes dense. Precious. Diamond like.
So when we see a movie, or hear a piece of music, or see a painting, we are seeing that density of expression, compression. We feel an essence.
