Haiti

01/14/2010

On January 12, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit outside of the capital of Haiti, causing widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, schools, government buildings, roads, and lives. Emergency responses from the U.S. Department of State, the American Red Cross, Mercy Corps, and others have been quick, but we need your immediate support to provide food, shelter, and other relief supplies. As the UN’s Special Envoy to Haiti, President Clinton is asking everyone to give what you can to help the people of Haiti respond and recover from this disaster.

Further Information

Approximately 2 million people live in the capital of Haiti and the surrounding areas where the earthquake struck. The American Red Cross is now estimating that 3 million people are affected by the disaster. Current reports from Haiti tell of terrible destruction, widespread chaos, and overcrowded hospitals.

President Clinton has long been committed to helping Haiti “build back better” from the hurricanes that devastated the nation in 2008 and to prepare for future disasters. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, now needs our assistance more than ever.

President Clinton’s UN office and the rest of the UN system are monitoring the situation. While the full impact of this earthquake is not yet known, we do know that the survivors need immediate help.

The unbelievable comment came from ultra-conservative Preacher, Pat Robertson regarding Haiti moving from a French colony to a independent nation—- “They(Haiti) said, `We will serve you if you will get us free from the French’. True story. And so the devil said, `OK, it’s a deal’. Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other.”

Mind blowing that he would imply that this Earthquake and the subsequent horrific tragedy is somehow their fault and God’s punishment. That’s not my God he is talking about and negates compassion and mercy as the appropriate response in the face of such a crisis. Jut had to say this somewhere.
